How is your ADHDer’s bedroom organised? Is it set out the way you want it to be? Is the bed in a certain place, the toy box, the desk, and other bits and pieces that your ADHDer treasures?
If you are having difficulty getting your child to put things away in their correct places that could well be the problem.
You have chosen where things need to go, not your child.
Many parents decide where the toys, the clothes, and the books should go because that is logical to them.
But it may not make sense to your child, and that’s what makes it hard for your child to find things when s/he needs it.
When your child has to then put things away again, s/he puts them where it makes sense to her or him, not necessarily to you.
So what can you do?
1. Accompany your child to the bedroom and suggest that you will help them organise all the things in a way that will work for them
2. Explain that a group of related objects can be organised in many different ways, e.g.
a) Books can be lined up on a shelf by height, subject, alphabetically by title or author, or colour b) Reference books can be placed on one side of the shelf, and on the other side of the shelf, any other books in any order c) If space is a problem, books that your child doesn’t often refer to can go to the back of the shelf or on a higher shelf, and those they frequently refer to can be easier to access
3. Items that are of great value are often placed within easy reach on desks and dresser tops, although they may not be frequently used, they are frequently observed
The point of organising is to make it easier for your child to find and put away their belongings. So, your child should really be responsible for making the decisions about where things are kept.
By being responsible for the decision regarding the layout of their room and where things are stored, they have greater ownership of ‘the nest’. Your child will, therefore, be more inclined to keep their personal space clean and tidy.
